This makes me sick.. Doctor visa denied over disabled son [Oct. 30th, 2008|10:21 am]
http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=657645

A German doctor who emigrated to rural Victoria to fill a critical doctor's shortage will be kicked out of the country because his son is intellectually disabled.

Bernhard Moeller and his family have been rejected a permanent visa on the grounds that his youngest son, 13-year-old Lukas, has Down syndrome.

Article under cut.. )
I'm really honestly appauled that the Australian Government has a blanket discrimination towards disabled people. These are some of the people that need help the most in the world, and to have it turned away without any further investigation is shocking. I have no words.

Way to go Australia.. showing yourself up as discriminatory, closed minded, non negotiable.. I mean really, what the hell are they thinking? Where is the human decency?

and i'm not even going to rant about the new internet laws this time.. that's to come..

a ramble on discrimination and education systems [Oct. 11th, 2008|11:25 am]
It's an interesting thing, to live in another country and see how different things are handled and done. One thing that living here has highlighted to me is while australians are generally rather open and friendly to each other or to strangers in some ways, like friendly to tourists who are lost or happy to chat to new people who are friends of their friends.. there are some things really rather discriminatory that most australians do, and the school system as well.

Firstly, the accent.. If we hear someone who has a country drawl or a western suburbs twang.. we as a whole presume them to be slower or stupider than someone who has a neutral to well spoken accent. People we call 'westies'.. If someone is born into one of these lower income areas they can either choose to speak like the people around them and continue living in a low income area or they can choose to alter their speech patterns to sound more precise and use correct english and be ostracized by those around them and slowly beat out a path fighting every step.

Basically all of this came up with talking about the higher education.. I was shocked that in sweden, people aren't moved into classes to teach the brighter kids maths or language or science through primary school or even high school. I aws shocked in wondering how smart kids are meant to learn anything if they are being taught at the same level as the rest of the class it must be horribly slow for them.

And then we were talking about the university education system and I was explaining about how, in australia.. it's not JUST your own marks, but then your marks are scaled with how well the rest of your school went and you are scaled accordingly. So, the people with the highest grades are not just the ones that did the best but also those from the top schools. And then it's the top 25 - 30 % of those marks that are given a UAI that is high enough to be able to apply to university.

When you take a step back and look at this.. this is basically dividing people into classes from the ages of 7 or 8.. because the higher classes are taught at a faster rate, people in middle classes or the bottom class will find it very hard to catch up and be in a top class in the beginning of highschool.. which of course then makes it almost impossible to be in a high class in the end of highschool and get a decent mark. Australian people are basically sorted into presumed intellectual capacity at an early age and expected to stay there. And even so. even those who DO qualify for university.. I don't know the statistics but i know many never actually finish. With the high prices of accommodation, low funding for people studying and very high hecs debts it is hard and expensive for people to get an education. AND those that don't get the all important piece of paper at the end just have a bundle of debt for their time. And of course, throw in snobbery from both accent and schools and you get a very divided class society discriminating against itself.. perhaps not quite as bad yet as the english are reputed to be, but of course, that's where we got it from. There is also the factor that if you come from the country or a lower income area and you even THINK about going to university you are getting way above yourself and think you are better than everyone too. Tall poppy syndrome strikes again.

Sweden on the other hand, looks at marks and if everyone gets a high mark, everyone can go to university. Of course, Sweden has its own version of tall poppy syndrome..Jante's Law where it's also expected that you don't do anything out of the ordinary, think you are special, think you can achieve more than anyone else..

But the difference is here, that higher education isn't seen as being above yourself.. it's the norm. A large amount of people here have one or even 2 degrees. And that's ok, a masters is ok too.. but not a doctorate.. that's being too fancy.

But.. education is valued here. And university is free. So, like australia you can get a small payment for studying and take out a loan to help you live, but that is the only debt you incur. Or if you work part time you can have a degree with no debt and i think that does a lot to encourage people to entinue to educate themselves. Well, that and the expectation that most people will have qualifications too.

Still it did come as a shock to me to find out that swedes don't discriminate on accents even though the accents are a lot more pronounced than the ones in australia. It doesn't have quite the same 'ooh... you're from there'  put down. (well, people from the district fo sköne are seen as strange and kind of danish and hard to understand, but not stupid at least)

It's just horrible to think that in australia, it is presumed that only a small percentage of the population is capable or deserving of having a higher education beyond school. There are of course many great tafe classes as well as ways into the university system beyond a UAI.. but still. It could be a whole lot better. I think australia really needs to look at itself as a whole and realise how education is lacking for so many people. BUt as more and more baby boomers are retiring i think this will become more apparent where the gaps are.

[Sep. 30th, 2008|11:15 pm]
I know it's been a while since i posted, I'm well, stll studying a lot of swedish, still working as a masseuse, still very happy and in love and all is welll.. i've even taken up jogging a few times a week!

Anyway, the main reason i'm posting is to let people know about this petition:

http://www.rspcansw.org.au/ways_to_help/campaigns/help_rebuild_yagoona_shelter

The petition is here

To get signatures together to help rebuild yagoona animal shelter. please sign it. I've volunteered for a brief time at cat protection society before and in places like that you start to see just how many animals need our help and support all the time. An animal isn't just a toy.. and they really need shelters for so people can find them and give them a second chance.

something i think everyone should be aware of.. [Aug. 24th, 2008|03:40 pm]

According to a 2006 report by the Livestock, Environment And Development Initiative, the livestock industry is one of the largest contributors to environmental degradation worldwide, and modern practices of raising animals for food contributes on a "massive scale" to air and water pollution, land degradation, climate change, and loss of biodiversity. The initiative concluded that "the livestock sector emerges as one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global."

Animals fed on grain or primarily graze need more water than grain crops. According to the USDA, growing crops for farm animals requires nearly half of the U.S. water supply and 80% of its agricultural land. Animals raised for food in the U.S. consume 90% of the soy crop, 80% of the corn crop, and 70% of its grain. In tracking food animal production from the feed through to the dinner table, the inefficiencies of meat, milk and egg production range from a 4:1 energy input to protein output ratio up to 54:1.[4] The result is that producing animal-based food is typically much less efficient than the harvesting of grains, vegetables, legumes, seeds and fruits, though this might not be largely true for animal husbandry in the developing world where factory farming is almost non existent, making animal based food much more sustainable.

from here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Environmental_effects_of_meat_production

The livestock sector emerges as one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global. The findings of this report suggest that it should be a major policy focus when dealing with problems of land degradation, climate change and air pollution, water shortage and water pollution, and loss of biodiversity.

In the report, senior U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization official Henning Steinfeld reports that the meat industry is “one of the most significant contributors to today’s most serious environmental problems"[2] and that "urgent action is required to remedy the situation."[3]

[mood | happy]

Today we'll be going to the WAY OUT WEST festival here in Göteborg, it's a bit like the big day out, but goes over several days, however we're just going today, as it has most the bands we want to see, like Sigur Ros, Broder Daniel, Sonic Youth, Franz Ferdinand, Iron and Wine, ahh, lots of bands..

The main ones i really want to see are sigur ros and broder daniel, looks like it should be a great day, hopefully we won't get rained on too much.

0 (0.0%)

sometimes, but only annoying repetitive songs and adds
0 (0.0%)

not at all, what ever are you talking about?
2 (9.1%)

Having songs in my head is such a normal part of my life that i have every day that i was amazed to find out that some people can't/don't do this.. for me, it's almost constant, and i can choose and mix songs and have it playing almost as clearly as listening to miusic from an outside source (just sometimes the lyrics can be a little fuzzy)
I was surprised that some people can't do this, or only get songs in their head if they hear something very persistant, and then it gets stuck in their head and they can't song override with something else.. I also wonder if it's mainly people with some musical training that can do this.. or it's the people that can that are more drawn towards music...

anyway, please let me know! :)

so far i can think of:
Peaches
Bedrooms and Hallways

question.. [Apr. 5th, 2008|12:09 pm]
So, my question to you all is, what issues or things do you believe people should be aware of, either as adults or from an age when they start to question the world?

cruelty to animals? vegetarianism? recycling? global warming? racism? energy awareness? environmental sustainability? not littering? organic foods?

What are the main issues that concern you that you wish people knew more about, and would learn about more?

What a weekend :D [Mar. 3rd, 2008|10:30 am]
Hannes and I flew to London on thursday and came back on saturday, so we could see a band and caught up with fantastic people too :D

before i continue, here is who we saw - Owen Pallett who plays under the name of final fantasy and he truly is amazing. The firt clip i'm putting here is because it was the last song played on the night, and this is shown in the same way we saw him, with the overhead projector behind him with the moving imagery. It's such an interesting and very human way to do visuals, it's different, but effective! It was kind of strange, he was wandering around in the crowd during the previous bands, and it seemed most people had no idea who he was, with people walking around him and sometimes even pushing past him.. we didn't actually go up and talk to him as there was nothing to say asides from 'wow, we think you're amazing' but it was nice to konw we could have if we had something to say.. he also set up all of his own gear, no roadies, and i don't think i've ever seen a headlining act do that before.. he seems very nice, sweet and kind of introverted. Lovely guy :D

Seeing him actually playing was incredible.. We were both incredibly happy since one of the tracks he played was CN tower belongs to the dead, which I've linked to before, but have it again, because it truly is incredible in the way it builds.. I was bursting out of my skin i was so happy :D great feeling :D

Ooook so on to london..  We first flew in  on  thursday afternoon - yes, the ryanair super cheap flights that were $90 AU  for both of us return from Göteborg to London - insanely good :D of course, it's a cheap airline, so basically like virgin blue, where you have to buy your food, and there are no seat numbers, it's just run to the plane to grab a seat where you can.. but for an hour long flight it's worth it.. wouldn't want it for flying to australia though :p
Funny to think it was actually longer getting from the airport into london itself than to fly from sweden to england.. ahh well, such is life. We were planning on staying with Leash and Casey that night, which we did, however they were going to underworld, so we didn't actually see them properly til the next day.

We had dinner with swedish Sara, who I haven't seen in about 5 or 6 years who i knew in newcastle, and it was lovely to see her and meet her new partner, who was a charming irish fellow. I had to laugh at how irish her accent has become, they both sounded very irish to me... but funnily enough, they both sounded quite swedish to Hannes, so it seems the accents have gone both ways, and we're both hearing what is familiar to us :p

While we were waiting to meet up with Sara, we wandered around inner london, leister square, picadilly circus, and i got to see the big red buses, lots of old architecture and laugh that yes, there really don't seem to be that many english in london.. so many people are from everywhere else..  We met up, had dinner at a nice japanese place and headed to Leash and Casey's.

Friday was spent wandering around London with Leash for the morning, going to st paul's cathedral, wandering past the Globe, going to another chursh who's name i've forgotten and being amazed that parts of it are still standing from 1200 or so.. nothing in australia is anywhere near that old asides from the land itself.. coming back and meeting up with Casey having hugs, chats and heading off to Camden Markets, wandering around etc etc.. and then heading to the Maximum Black festival and seeing several bands but the main important one was Final Fantasy.. the rest were ok, but just filler for me since i wanted to see Final Fantasy so very much!

It was SOO good to see Leash and Casey again! Such wonderful beautiful people that I feel so lucky to know :D they really both know how to make me smile and laugh and I love seeing them. Haha actually had some funny conversations with Casey about having an aussie accent overseas means that you're instantly likeable and can also call people bastards to their face and they cop it since we're australians and they take it as endearing.. but i think more to the point it's just casey being charismatic :p

I've also discovered that while Sweden is colder than london, it still actually has better weather.. the skies here are blue and then sun comes out SOMETIMES.. still not a lot compared to australia, but you can't have everything.. i suspect after a while of swedish winter i'll actually be HAPPY to be in a 40 degrees australian summer sooner or later and i never thought i'd say that :p

We then stayed u all night to get our flight back early morning, slept all day saturday and had a lazy day of brainfried gaming yesterday which was bliss..

and tonight? We're off to see The Dillinger Escape Plan :D oh man.. it's such a week for good bands :D
Here is them playing Come to Daddy, yes, the aphex twin song

I'm posting from my own computer!!! [Feb. 18th, 2008|09:01 am]
[mood | happy]

Hannes managed to put it all back together, and oh how i love it! The beloved little beastie managed to survive the drives being in my carry on luggage, and the case and other parts dealing with australia post and whatever other parts of the world post it went through on the way to get here.. I'd been a little worried about the state it would arrive in, but here it is, happily humming away :D I'm sooo happy!

It also snowed the other day, which was so very exciting for me, as I haven't really seen snow falling before (asides from a very small amount of sleety snow when i was about five at my parents house) so I was grinning and bouncing around like a monkey! :D

[Current Location |an apartment in Göteborg]
[mood | happy]
[music |aphex twin]

Ok, I'm in sweden, a lot better rested than before, and really enjoying myself.

I can actually get a glimpse of blue sky just for an instant right now which is a rather rare thing! mostly it's overcast and cold sitting around 1 - 4 degrees on a nice day, so I've mostly been staying inside and catching up on a lot of sleep and adjusting.

There are already a few things I've noticed since i've been here, and of course there will be many more observations to come!

- everyone is very very tall. this also means all doorways are very high.
- there is a PINK sports newspaper and a salmon coloured financial one.. these weird me out for some reason.. Pink. it's not right.
- the aisles in the supermarket are like an extra shelf row has been taken out.. there is literally about a 3 - 4 meter space in between the aisles..
- the bread here is soo tasty! it's not white it's actually tastes like it's real and good for you..
- they don't have strawberry jam on bread, only pancakes
- the ä key is where the ' normally is so if i'm chatting to any of you online, that's what it should be.. i'm slowly adjusting :p
- there is a river right outside our apartment but it shows no side of flooding and doesn't seem to ever flood. this is very strange.

As to my relationship well, wow. I can honestly say I haven't ever been as happy as I am now! :) we fit together so well, and are very much in love. he's amazing in every way, we're amazing. Its even better than i had hoped or could imagine, and i can't stop smiling :) and if you want to know more you'll have to ask me ;)
